Karl Rove has been called a lot of things: "the architect," "boy genius," and "Bush's Brain" to name just a few which are printable in this blog. However, "family guy" has never been one of them.
In fact, who even knew he had a family? It turns out he has a wife and son in Texas, which according to Karl, he's want to spend more time with.
Are you as tired as I am of people using their families as an excuse? We all want to spend more time with our families. Granted, my family consists of a husband and two grade school-aged children who still can't drive - and in one case, read - by themselves, while Rove's includes a college-age son and, before yesterday, a nameless, faceless spouse.
So how many of you believe that Rove's son is going to take some time off from his under-grad work and go fishing with his all-but-absent-during-his-formative-years dad?
As The Huffington Post's Kathleen Reardon more succinctly put it, "Hey Karl! Would a More Honest Reason for Leaving Kill You?"
I'm sure I'm not the only one who is galled each time an embattled government official or corporate raider...er...I mean executive, uses family as an excuse to make a hasty exit. In fact, Wall Street Journal "The Juggle" blogger Sara Schaefer Munoz lists some recent well-known resignations from people who have "invoked the same line:"
- Karen Hughes, presidential adviser
- Dan Bartlett, longtime Bush aide
- Omar Cruz, Philippines national treasurer
- Steve Reinemund, CEO of PepsiCo
- Craig T. Monaghan, CFO of Sears Holdings Corp.
- Larry C. Glasscock, chief executive of WellPoint
Say "I'm burned out." Say "I thought it was flax seed oil." Say "I'm about to be indicted and I didn't want to drag down my boss." BUT STOP USING YOUR FAMILY AS AN EXCUSE! It demeans not only a public which is waaaaaaay smarter than that....it also demeans the family, particularly the one the quitter is allegedly quitting to spend more time with.
Rove's son goes to school at Trinity University in San Antonio. And according to The Wall Street Journal, which broke the story yesterday, Rove "and his wife, Darby, plan to spend much of their time at their home in nearby Ingram, in the Texas Hill Country."
So after Darby and son Andrew get re-acquainted with dear old dad...how long do you think it will take Karl before he writes an Op-Ed or two, and starts pouring over GOP presidential primary exit poll results at the request of desperate candidates?
His own family probably isn't even snowed into believing his public excuse for resigning.
Maybe it just got too lonely in Bush's Brain to stay there any longer. Now there's an excuse that at least 65 percent of the American public can get behind!
