Anybody who runs for president knows you have to have thick skin to survive the race. But now the question is, just how much of that skin should you show?
I'm referring, of course, to the big to-do over Mrs. Clinton's cleavage. Hillary's judgment regarding her display of decollete was brought into question recently by Washington Post fashion writer Robin Givhan, who started tongues wagging with an article in the Style section titled "Hillary Clinton's Tentative Dip Into New Neckline Territory."
In it, Givhan describes in detail a recent trip to the Senate floor by Mrs. Clinton, which was also seen on C-SPAN2. "She was wearing a rose-colored blazer over a black top. The neckline sat low on her chest and had a subtle V-shape," writes Givhan. "The cleavage registered after only a quick glance. No scrunch-faced scrutiny was necessary. There wasn't an unseemly amount of cleavage showing, but there it was. Undeniable."
Givhan goes on to say that "to display cleavage in a setting that does not involve cocktails and hors d'oeuvres is a provocation."
It was like a Pandora's Box filled with Victoria Secret goodies had been opened. Mrs. Clinton's cleavage became fair game...taking this presidential campaign where no presidential campaign has gone before. Political blogs as varied as Outside the Beltway, Right Pundits and Liberal Values had a heyday, with pictures! I'm sure porn blogs did too - but I didn't research those (really).
In a weekend OpEd in The NYTimes called "The Cleavage Conundrum," Judith Warner takes a stand for all "women of a certain age" who have earned the right to be "a person of cleavage" without having to either apologize for it, or even give it a second thought.
That is, I guess, until you become a front runner for your party's presidential nomination.
Considering this election cycle is now dragging into its umpteenth month and we're still not even into primary season yet - it's no wonder it's come down to this.
The next thing you know, the cut of Barack Obama's trousers in a certain region of his anatomy will be making headlines.
Or is that just too sexist.
